INHERIT THE WIND

Setting

A Small Town. Summer. Not too long ago.

Available Roles*:

Henry Drummond (Male Presenting, 50+): A nationally known attorney who was once Brady’s closest friend and political confidante. He is about the same age as Brady. Folksy but can bristle when pushed.

Matthew Brady (Male Presenting, 50+): A three-time presidential candidate and nationally known attorney. He is a Populist and a dynamic public speaker even though he is in his late 60s or early 70s.

E. K. Hornbeck (0pen, 35+): A reporter for the fictional Baltimore Herald newspaper. He is young, sarcastic, cynical and deeply opposed to religious belief.

Bert Cates (Male presenting, 20-30): A Hillsboro high school teacher straight out of college who has taught the theory of evolution in violation of a state law banning its teaching in classrooms; uncomfortable in the limelight.

Rachel Brown (Female presenting, 20’s): The Rev. Brown’s daughter. She is romantically involved with Bertram Cates before all this happened and is now very conflicted about the situation.

Reverend Jeremiah Brown (Male Presenting, 40+): A fundamentalist preacher who believes fervently in Biblical literalism. He is widowed and has a daughter Rachel Brown.

JUDGE (Open, 50+): A local county court judge who is subtly sympathetic to Rev. Brown’s views.

MAYOR (Open, 40+): The mayor of Hillsboro. The mayor supports Brady.

Tom Davenport (Male presenting, 30+): The local district attorney. Davenport assists Brady during the trial.

Meeker (Open, 40+): A bailiff at the Hillsboro courthouse; very laid back.

Sarah Brady (Female presenting, 50+): Matthew Harrison Brady’s wife; gracious, and protective of her husband.

Sillers (Male presenting, 30’s): An employee at the local feed store and a member of the jury. Drummond accepts Sillers as a juror after Sillers tells him that he focuses on making a living while his wife takes care of religious matters for both of them.

Elijah (Male presenting, 40’s): A mountain man. The illiterate Elijah sells Bibles to the townspeople and preaches his beliefs to the crowd.

Mrs. Krebs (Female presenting, 30’s): A loudly outspoken supporter of Rev. Brown and leader of the Ladies’ Aid Society.

Jesse Dunlap (Open, 30’s): A farmer and cabinetmaker. Dunlap stands as a potential juror, but Drummond dismisses him because of his enthusiastic support of Brady.

Mr./Mrs. Goodfellow (Open, 30’s): The owner of a store across the square from the courthouse. The storekeeper professes not to have convictions about creation because they are not good for business.

Melinda (Female presenting, 11-14): A student who believes strongly in the Bible.

Howard (Male presenting, 11-14): A student who was in Bertram Cates’ class.

TOWNSPEOPLE, JURORS, SPECTATORS, REPORTERS, COURT REPORTER

*In our classical theatre productions, we recognize that traditionally characters have been portrayed within a binary gender framework. We are actively challenging this by inviting actors of all gender identities, including gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary individuals, to audition for any role they resonate with. We are also committed to racial and ethnic inclusivity. While some roles may have specific requirements based on the character’s background, we encourage actors of all races and ethnicities to apply. We are dedicated to creating a welcoming and accommodating environment. If you have any specific needs, questions, or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Your comfort and representation matter to us.

In order to promote a respectful and productive work environment, harassment of any kind is not acceptable at The Upstart Crow (TUC). TUC also prohibits harassment and discrimination based upon an individual’s age, color, disability, gender, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or veteran status.

Harassment occurs when unwelcome verbal or physical conduct, because of its severity and/or persistence, interferes significantly with an individual’s work or safety, or adversely affects performance conditions.  Harassment also occurs when a person uses a position of authority to engage in unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, or other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.

Questions About Auditions, Rehearsals and Performances:

Email questions to the director Max Cabot at: auditions@theupstartcrow.org

We invite actors to attend open auditions for all of our regular shows. To receive reminders of upcoming auditions, sign up for our audition mailing list below.  Unless otherwise specified, non-regional American dialect will be used for all shows.

The Upstart Crow Theatre Company is an actors’ company and actors are expected to help with tech work—set and/or costume construction weekend afternoons during the rehearsal period—and publicity. All actors are expected to help with move-in before opening and strike on closing night.

Like all theatre companies, we have a commitment to our ensemble members. Still, we always cast actors from outside our company. Act with us often enough and you’ll gain the benefits of membership.
